The South Mining and Concentration Complex is the first enterprise in the CIS, built for mining and processing iron magnetite quartzite for gaining iron ore concentrate and blast furnace sinter.

The Complex was built in a very short time. On April 28, 1950 the Council of Ministers of USSR adopted a Decree on the construction of the South Mining and Concentration Complex and on May 30, 1952 the project brief was approved. In 1953, the construction was started and only July 27, 1955 the first ton of concentrate was produced (two months later the first ton of sinter was produced), that is considered to be the birthday of the South Mining and Concentration Complex. On November 28, 1956 the State Commission signed the Act of Commissioning of the first stage of the South Mining and Concentration Complex-1.

On March 23, 1990 the Complex was converted into the rental company South Mining and Concentration Complex. On December 29, 1994 the rental company was converted into OJSC South Mining and Concentration Complex. In 1995, the enterprise became an open joint stock company with public stock of 25.8%. In late 2007, the largest shareholder of Evraz (Russia), the company Lanebrook purchased 50% of the South Mining and Concentration Complex together with other assets of the Ukrainian group "Privat". Currently, the major shareholders of OJSC South Mining and Concentration Complex are Smart-Holding (Ukraine) and companies of the Evraz Group (Russia).

The South Mining and Concentration Complex produces iron ore sinter, manganese ore sinter, ore concentrates, rock crushing dust, slates, gravel. The raw materials base of the enterprise is quartzites of the Skelevatske deposit, which is located in the center of Kryvyi Rih iron ore basin near closure of the West Inguletska syncline. The seventh ferruginous horizon id regarded to be a productive one. The deposit is being open cast mined.

At average the South Mining and Concentration Complex produces 34 million tons of rock mass per year, including raw ore up to 18 million tons per year. The primary concentration method is one in a weak magnetic field. Technological scheme includes 3 stages of crushing and 4-5 stages of magnetic separation. Each stage provides some wastes; the midproduct is processed further. As a result, the ore with Fe weight of 35,01%, magnetic iron of 27.33% the concentrate with Fe weight of 64,77-65,31% and humidity of 10% is produced.

Average annual production of the enterprise is about 8 million tons of concentrate and 4.5 million tons of sinter. Fe specific weight in sinter is 53,31-54,13%. Products of the enterprise are delivered to the metallurgical enterprises of Ukraine, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria, Austria.

The South Mining and Concentration Complex is a winner of the nationwide ranking competition "Made in Ukraine" and got an honor award "The Highest Grade" and was permitted for labeling its products with "The Highest Grade" mark. The enterprise also was awarded a diploma and a sign "The Highest Grade".
